“Autism friendly” can mean a menu of small adjustments on every sailing, or a team of trained helpers who travel with your family. Here is what the autism friendly cruise lines actually offer, in their own published terms, and where outside support fits.

Royal Caribbean’s Autism Friendly Program

Royal Caribbean describes an autism friendly initiative for families living with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities, and says the services are available on all of its cruises. According to Royal Caribbean’s autism friendly page, they include:

  • Expedited check-in, boarding and departure, which shortens the lines that are hardest for many children.
  • Gluten-free and dairy-free choices for children, and gluten-free meals for teens and adults.
  • In the Adventure Ocean kids’ program (ages 3 to 11), flexible grouping by ability and an exception to the toilet-trained policy.
  • Pagers or phones so parents can be reached while a child is in the program, subject to availability.
  • Sensory-friendly films with lower light and volume, where moving around and talking are fine — on all Oasis class sailings, and on other ships when an autism group or at least five guests with autism are aboard.
  • A tote of autism friendly toys to borrow, and “All Aboard My Cruise” social-story booklets for Oasis and Icon class ships.
  • The Autism Channel, on-demand content on Quantum, Oasis, Freedom, Voyager and Radiance class ships.

The line adds that its youth staff receive autism awareness training. It is also clear about a limit: hosted activities do not include supervision or one-on-one attention.

Staff-Assisted Sailings With Autism on the Seas

Autism on the Seas is an independent organization that has worked with Royal Caribbean since 2007 and now serves guests with autism, Asperger syndrome, Down syndrome, Tourette syndrome, cerebral palsy and other cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities.

On its staff-assisted cruises, background-checked staff approved by the cruise lines travel with the group on selected Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian and Carnival sailings. The organization describes respite time and private activities and sessions, so parents get a break and children get attention matched to them. For families sailing on other dates, it offers an assistance package on the major lines without staff on board.

Because the staffed sailings are fixed, a family group that wants one should look at those dates first and fit the rest of the party around them.

Disney Cruise Line and Neurodivergent Guests

Disney Cruise Line publishes guidance for guests with autism and other conditions that make waiting in lines or crowded spaces difficult. Its Special Services team asks families to get in touch at least 60 days before sailing to talk through options. Disney also suggests completing online check-in at least a day ahead, warns that some theaters and restaurants use sound and lighting effects that can surprise, and recommends back-row seats in shows for guests who may need to step out. Look up the current page on the Disney Cruise Line site before you book, since programs change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which are the autism friendly cruise lines?

Royal Caribbean publishes the most detailed autism friendly program among the big lines, available on all its cruises. Disney Cruise Line has a Special Services team and guidance for neurodivergent guests. Autism on the Seas brings trained staff on selected sailings of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian and Carnival.

Will Adventure Ocean staff give my child one-on-one care?

No. Royal Caribbean says its hosted activities do not provide supervision or one-on-one attention. One-to-one support on board is what staff-assisted sailings from an outside organization are for.

Do these services cost extra?

The cruise line’s own autism friendly services are part of the cruise. Staffed sailings and private sessions from an outside organization are a separate purchase; ask that organization what is included.
