Special Needs Cruises FAQ

Are special needs cruises more expensive?

The cruise fare is the same as for any guest on that sailing. A line’s own access services are part of the cruise. Outside programs — staff, clinicians or a hosted group — charge separately for what they provide.

How far ahead should we book?

Earlier than usual. Staffed and clinical programs run on a limited number of sailings with limited places, and lines ask for special-services requests well before departure. A year ahead is sensible for a group.

Do we need travel insurance?

It is strongly worth considering for any group that includes a medical or support need, because a change in health can force a cancellation. Read the pre-existing condition terms carefully.

Can a support organization charter a whole ship?

Some do, but most supported groups book a block of cabins on an ordinary sailing. That keeps the cost down and gives everyone the full ship to enjoy.

Is a sober cruise only for people in a twelve-step program?

No. Hosted sober groups welcome anyone who wants an alcohol-free holiday, including people who are sober-curious. Meetings are optional.

What if our need is mobility rather than autism or medical care?

Our sister site Accessible Ocean Cruises covers accessible cabins, scooters, wheelchairs, tender ports and hearing and vision access.

Can a guest with autism bring a support person in a separate cabin?

Yes; many families book a connecting or adjacent cabin for a support person or relative. Ask for cabins near each other when you book, and tell the line’s access team who is in each.

Will the ship’s medical center handle my condition?

Ship medical centers treat illness and emergencies on board, but they are not set up for ongoing specialist care such as hemodialysis. Ask the line what its medical center can and cannot do, and plan specialist needs with a provider before you sail.

Do I have to use Mister Cruise?

No. Everything on this site is free to read. If you would like help, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will quote the cruise for your whole party at no charge.
